Waterbuck are seldom far from water. They are easily identified by a white circle of hair around the tail and a white "collar" of hair around the neck and snout. The chin is also white. There is a myth that waterbuck meat is bad-tasting. Both sexes have scent glands that deter predators like crocodile. Contrary to the myth, waterbuck has good-tasting, coarse-grain meat when field-dressed properly.
